Memoires of a President is een boek geschreven door Jimmy Carter over zijn ambperiode (1977 - 1981) als President van de US.
Ik heb het boek met name gelezen om meer inzicht te krijgen (vanuit het perspectief van een Amerikaanse president) in het verloop van de besprekingen op Camp David waar Egypte (Anwar Sadat) en Israel (Menachim Begin) onder leiding van de VS (Jimmy Carter) een accoord proberen te sluiten die vrede in het Midden-Oosten moet brengen.

Op 18 jarige leeftijd schreef de la Boetie deze klassieker over burgelijke ongehoorzaamheid.

Mijn lijfboek is uiteraard `Angst voor de vrijheid’, van Erich Fromm.
Een psychologisch filosofische analyse van massahang naar conformisme en populisme, 67 jaar geleden geschreven maar actueel op het visionaire af!
Het leitmotiv is uiteraard ingegeven door de vraag waarom Joodse rasgenoten van Fromm zich bij miljoenen gewillig lieten uitleveren aan het Arisch-Germaans totalitairisme en waarom er door de autochtone bewoners van Europese landen niet tegen werd geprotesteerd. (Nederlandse ambtenaren gaven zelfs de sleutels van de bevolkingsregisters aan Seyss Inquart) Met een maar beetje weerstand zouden de Nazi’s er een zware klus aan hebben gehad om hun Endlösung per Holocaust af te werken.
Moeiteloos plaatst Erich Fromm als Freudiaans kind van zijn tijd, dit gegeven in een tijdloos archetypisch kader.
Dit standaardwerk over humanisme en de vrije gedachte werpt een onthullend licht op waarom er thans in Nederland, G-8 en EU-lidstaten zo’n treurige neiging is om nieuwe fascistoïde machtsstructuren ruimte te gunnen, ja zelfs toe te juichen. Het verklaart op heldere wijze de complexe psychologische mechanismen die binnen de korte keren leiden tot dociel volgen van verkeerd gezag. Ik zoek boeken over het vaticaan. Weet iemand er misshcien? Liefst wel in het nederlands, mn engels is kwa lezen een ramp.
De Pakistaanse journalist Ahmed Rashid is vooral bekend om het uitmuntende boek “Taliban” uit 2000, waarin hij pijnlijk duidelijk de opkomst van de extremistische groepering in Afghanistan schetst, en een breder kader trekt naar de verhoudingen tussen Pakistan, India, de VS en de Kaspische staten.
Decent into Chaos kan gezien worden als een “opvolger”. Het beschrijft de soms warrige situatie in Pakistan, de verhouding Pakistan, Afghanistan en het opkomende extremisme in Pakistan en de landen rond de Kaspische Zee.
